Up to four scholars will be selected for the Graduate Scholars Program. They will receive a $500 stipend to support their individual research, be assigned a mentor from the Project MALES Faculty/Research Affiliates network, and receive professional development. Our fellowship application is closed, but please check our website next summer for details on the 2025-2026 cycle. You can also sign up for our listserv to get notified when the application opens.
Application Eligibility, Criteria, & Commitments:
To be eligible to apply for the PM-GSP, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Individuals must be enrolled in a doctoral degree program (e.g., Ph.D. or Ed.D.) within any field.
- Individuals who are currently or about to enter the dissertation phase.
- Individuals whose research and/or dissertation topic focuses on Men of Color in education (e.g., K-12 students, college students, teachers, faculty, administrators).
- Preference will be given to applicants who can demonstrate their need for mentorship and articulate how they would benefit from a mentoring relationship with a Project MALES Faculty member or Research Affiliate.
Scholars selected for the PM-GSP will commit to the following terms:
- Meet with their assigned Project MALES Faculty and Research Affiliate mentor.
- Attend all monthly professional development sessions with the PM Scholars Cohort.
- Submit a 2-page research brief of your final dissertation at the end of the academic year. This research brief will be published in the Project MALES Research Brief series.
- Submit a professional headshot, brief bio (150 words), and research interest statement to be featured on the Project MALES website and social media.
- Help promote their selection as a PM-GSP Scholar through social media or other outlets.
- We strongly encourage PM-GSP Scholars to present their research at regional and national conferences.

Current 2024-2025 Scholars
Johnnie L. Allen, Jr.‘s research interests include examining critical masculinities and Black college men’s embodiment of Afrafeminist ideologies and Black feminisms in their leadership learning experiences and development as a form of resistance to hegemonic masculinity.
Taharka Anderson is a scholar-activist from Long Beach, CA, with over a decade of experience dedicated to supporting social and educational justice. His phenomenological dissertation historicizes Black masculinity within Western patriarchal social systems and explores how college-aged Black males experience, make sense of, and navigate school discipline in the U.S.
Anthony Lizarraga is a doctoral candidate from Long Beach, CA, in the educational policy studies program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His current research focuses on understanding how school discipline is operationalized and implemented in early childhood educational settings, particularly how exclusionary discipline practices shape the experiences of Youth of Color.
Terrell T. Richardson is a Social Work PhD candidate at The University of Alabama. His research focuses on Black males in higher education, specifically the relationship between social determinants of mental health and academic success. He holds degrees from Livingstone College, UNC Greensboro, and the Joint MSW Program at NC A&T/UNC Greensboro.
